Unlike Garth Brooks, I have friends in high places. Now, I don't know about your ideas on high places, but outside of Cheech and Chong, my highest placed friends are in the DVD industry.
Maybe you should read that again. I said the DVD Industry.
Yeah, that one.
And said friend has given me the hook up. The hook up for the as-of-yet-unreleased Season 3 of the Homicide DVD Collection. But, there's a catch. I've got to give away this collection! It truly brings tears to my eyes, but I love you, my unnamed, non-existent reader (and I'm not just saying that), so you get my booty. Wait .... that didn't come out right. Ah well...
Here's where you get to play your part. You're still reading and paying attention, right?
Way back when, around 1995 - 1996, there was a loveable character hanging out in the homicide newsgroups, named Bug. Bug, as it turns out created promos for NBC. You know, those little 20-30 second blips advertising the upcoming episode of a particular tv show? Not the "coming next week" which appears at the end of the credits, but the commericials for Homicide which would appear during "Law and Order", or in the last commercial break of the 9pm showing of NBC's Dateline Friday, back in the day.
Bug was a regular and we loved him. He would take criticism about his promos and, best of all, gossip with us. He'd tell us that he wasn't responsible for that line in the promo. That someone else at NBC had changed it behind his back or had overruled his opinion.
Anyway, at one point, Bug offered the newsgroup the chance to write the copy for a promo for "Gone for Goode", the series premiere — which NBC was rerunning one January evening. Here, you can see my two attempts for that episode. A few months later, Bug came back with a second offer. Here, you can read the thread, Write My Copy, Part II thanks to Google Groups.
Bet you can't guess what the contest is? Ahh, you're smarter than I thought.
Here's what I want you to do. I want you to write me copy for a promo for the 3rd season episode "Crosetti", my absolute favorite episode. It's both easier and more difficult than you would think. Read the thread. That's how I want you to do it. 20 seconds. No more. No less. You want to get a free copy of Season 3? You gotta show me you love the show.
Now, I know what you're going to say. You're going to say that your attempt is no good. That's alright. I'm not judging this based on how good I think you did, how well you brought across the point of the episode (or what ever thematic point you stress in your copy). I'm judging this on which copy I like best. Period. If I like yours the best, that's the winner.
You've got until Friday, October 31, 2003 to submit as many different promo copies to me as you want. Hit the email link at the bottom of the page. One entry per email please. Oh, and leave me a valid reply-to address. Nothing worse than trying to tell someone they've won and the only email address they've given me has been borked.
I'll make the decision over that weekend, inform the winner and send out the booty post-haste. Oh, I'll even post the winning entry, right here. Maybe, I'll even post all the entries. That would depend on how many non-existent readers actually enter this contest.
Flames telling me how much this contest sucks will be read with great vigor and burned in our weekly bonfires.
