Glad you made it this far. I'm surprised actually. Why, in God's name, would anyone want to know more about this site? I dunno, but I figured there were people out there that might care, hence, this page.
On a serious note, Homicide: Life on the Web would be nothing without Homicide: Life on the UseNet.
Let it be noted that this page is an unofficial page for Homicide: Life on the Street, a television show on the National Broadcasting Corporation of the United States of America. It is in no way sanctioned or approved of by NBC or any of its affiliates. It is provided for the sheer enjoyment of everyone who visits it and is not intended to be present any official view of NBC.
This page has been designed with the "lowest common denominator" in mind. Therefore, it is meant to be run at 640x480 resolution at a color depth of 8 bits (256 colors). Of course, it can be run at greater resolutions (I'm running at 1280x1024@32bpp color depth) and color depths, but I'm not sure what everyone has, so I made it the sVGA standard. Most of the JPG images look pixelated at this color, however. I'm not taking the time to make them look better. Increase your color depth if you want to see clear non-pixelated colors on the images. Most computers nowadays come with graphic cards and monitors that can support greater than 8 bit (256) color depth.
It's rather difficult to design a page with fonts that a) everyone has, b) look good and c) convey the proper emotion. With that in mind, I have specified fonts for my Headers. The first font to try is P22 Typewriter (as far as I am aware, it is only available for the PC). Barring the existence of either of these two, it uses Courier New. Without either of those fonts, the browser displays the Headers with whatever font is set as default sans-serif in the browser itself.
I decided to specify the fonts rather than create images of them because the fonts are quicker than images for people with limited bandwidth. There are payoffs and drawbacks to every scheme when trying to represent information on the Web currently. People that want the specialized fonts can download them (just click on the names above and you can download them). This way, they can use the fonts not only for my webpage, but also for their own documents. Images are larger, take longer to download, and cannot be reused. Feel free to download the fonts to make your surfing of this site more enjoyable.
This site validates as transitional HTML 4.0.
Check it out!
After having a frames site, I decided that with a
little ingenuity, I could design a navigation without frames that
worked a thousand times better. I'm glad to say that I hate frames.
I think the idea is nice, but the implementation needs a lot of
work.
Lynx, the wave of the past. Lynx is a text browser. No
graphics, no oddball fonts, just the text. It's small, it's
fast, and I grew up on it with Unix.
Ironically, even with the Cascading Style
Sheets, this site looks good in any browser. I've managed to get
the site to look presentable, albeit a tad boring and plain, without
Style Sheets. If your browser can't handle style sheets, the
information will still be presented. This works well for Opera, Mosaic,
Lynx, etc. The pages present well, but they are a tad boring and plain.
This page also looks good with the images turned off.
