On February 10th, 2001, Jason Lempka asked Kate Springle to marry him, after 4 years of blissful living in sin. Despite the happy arrangement they had both enjoyed, she agreed to this change in status. Here's how it happened . . .

While sitting around one night with Mom and Dad Springle, Dad mentioned that property in Captains Cove (where Mom and Dad live) was going for quite a reasonable rate, and that anyone who could afford to should buy some.

Kate and Jason had had many discussions about what they wanted to do after Kate finished her Master's at UMCP's College of Journalism, and moving back to the Eastern Shore, where Kate is originally from, had come up many times.

Since Jason works from home for Sudbury Valley School, (a gig he landed through his charm and intelligence), it doesn't matter to him where they live, and in fact he doesn't like people as a whole very much and the idea of living somewhere where there are less of them sounded just peachy to him.

Kate, of course, loved being a beach bum in high school, and thought she could probably find some kind of job on the Eastern Shore, maybe even designing spiffy webpages like this one.

So, Jason and Kate decided to go down to the Eastern Shore to buy some property at their next earliest convenience, which happened to be the weekend before their fourth anniversary.

On Friday the 9th, in the evening, Jason and Kate drove down to the shore, and on Saturday morning, got up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to go property hunting with Mom, Dad, and Slash. Slash promised that, for his part, he would pee on every single property they liked, so that he could easily find it for them again. Jason and Kate thanked him with potato chips.

After driving around for most of the morning, and looking at pretty much all of the property in their price range, Jason and Kate narrowed it down to two properties they would not mind having. One was a beautiful little lot, far far from civilization (at least a mile or 2 from another house). It had a few acres of marshland behind it, and therefore a beautiful view of the Chincoteague bay. We'll call that Number 1, as that was their first choice.

The second piece of property was a VERY close second. It was closer to civilization, and only 0.7 miles from Mom and Dad Springle's house. It was a wooded lot, and no one had built around it yet, so it was surrounded by wooded lots too. When they drove by the lot, there were three or four deer lying in the forests nearby, peering out with big brown eyes. This was taken to be a good sign.

So, upon returning to Mom and Dad Springles' house, Kate called Bill Tull at Decatur Realty in Pocomoke, and asked if both properties were still available, and if the land would "perk" (which means a sewer system can be put in).

Lot Number 1, because it was so far from the developed part of the neighborhood, was not a feasible place to build, but lot Number 2, which was closer to civilization, looked like a good option. So, Kate and Jason and Mom and Dad Springle piled into Dad's truck again (this time leaving Slash to guard the house), and headed for the bustling metropolis that is Pocomoke City, MD. There, Kate and Jason went through the very exciting process of signing up, together, to buy a beautiful little piece of land to call their very own.
