So after Jason and Kate signed the papers to buy the little piece of land, they went back to Mom and Dad Springle's house and had some lunch. After eating, Jason was uncharacteristically excited, and wanted to go back and look at the land, and maybe see if they could find one of the stakes marking the edge of it.
You see, years and years ago, when Captain's Cove was founded, they staked off each piece of land. Many of these stakes are no doubt now buried under a few layers of topsoil, but Kate was also quite excited, and agreed to go back and look for a stake with Jason. They took Dad's 100 foot-long tape measure with them to help.
When they got back to the lot, Kate and Jason first each took a side of the street, going on the theory that any stake they could find would help them find the edge of one property, and from there at least maybe they could measure and get a better idea where they should be looking for their property edges.

Maybe at this point I should tell you, dear reader, that the lot and all the lots around it are currently covered in trees. In fact, if you'll look on the map above, NONE of the lots in view are currently developed. So, you can see how it would be hard to find the edge of any of them, with no reference point.

After walking up and down the edges of the road and finding nothing, Kate had the bright idea that maybe they should go around to Driftwood, and see if one of the lots that backs up to Kate and Jason's lot had any visible markings. As it turned out, this was a wonderful idea. Lot 496 on the above map had been recently surveyed. Of course, by recently I mean more recently than the rest of the lots. It had bright orange flags marking all 4 sides of lot 496 (Which is almost square). Kate and Jason realized that if they lined up with both of the flags marking the back of lot 496, and then backed up 28.68 feet (as you can see on the map), they SHOULD be able to find the area where the stake that marked the back point of their pie-piece lot should have been.
